Mother character in Bollywood finds a prominent place.The Bollywood mothers roles have been written focusing their adoring smiles, singing lories (lullabies) and sacrifices made for the sake of their children. This character has been an integral part of the storyline.

In a majority of movies in the decade of 80’s (60’s as well) the protagonists fights for justice or the sufferings caused by villain (grey shade) to his mother. We are trying to pay gratitude to the most dukhiyaari maa’s of Hindi cinema.

1 Nirupa Roy

There is no rocket science to guess Nirupa Roy is the original maa of bollywood.She plays the memorable mother of duo Amitabh and Shammi Kapoor where ‘Mere paas maa hai’ – the epic dialogue from deewar talks about her in context.People also remember her for the distressed ‘Andhi maa’ in Amar akbar anthony whose kids got separated in a mishap.She played the typical mother character whose sufferings fail to end.We have often seen Nirupa roy playing the mother of Amitabh in old classics.We have seen her putting on white saree with a red bindi (husband missing/fled !) waiting for her husband and raising her child on her own.

Rakhee Gulzar’s is not only about “Mere Karan Arjun Aayenge” the iconic dialogue from karan Arjun.She is also the one who had played the role of heroine in blockbuster film sharmilee.Rakhee has won three Filmfare Awards in her career which marks her talent.Later on she switched over to more character roles more of them were of mother.She won accolades for the role of Amitabh’s mother in Shakti.In soldier she played the character of a helpless mother whose husband was falsely implicated and declared a traitor.

We know Reema lagoo playing the role of a mother who has left her husband as he is involved in wrong doings or the husband has left her for the other woman.With the role of Juhi Chawla’s mother in Qayamat se Qayamat tak to Ajay Devgan’s in Naajayaj she rose to fame.She plays a memorable role as Rahul Roy’s mother in Aashiqui.On Television ,Reema Laagu gained fame as saas in Tutu-Mainmain comedy serial.

4 Farida Jalaal

She is popular for baauji’s wife and Kajol’s doting mother in movie dilwale dulhania le jayenge.We have seen her as mother in Raja Hindustani, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and numerous films.Farida Jalaal is also remembered for her role in Aradhana as Rajesh Khanna’s girlfriend a sond that famous song- “Bagon me bahar hai..”.She later opted to tv serials and noticed in Shararat as Naani who can do magic.

5 Sushma Seth

Known to play mother of rishi kapoor in many of the films Sushma seth is a well known face on the screen.She rose to fame with the role of Dadi in classic Doordarshan’s TV soap ‘Hum Log’.She was a part of popular tv serial Dekh Bhai Dekh.She di noticeable roles in Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Taal.She may not be the most dukhiyaari maa in films but also not the least one.Lately , we saw her in a camio role in Student of the Year.
