BHU or the Banaras Hindu University also offers post graduation courses in languages like English, French, Persian, Sanskrit, Telugu, Urdu, German, Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, Pali, and Chinese.
The University was established in 1916 by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya with Dr Annie Besant’s help and is one of the oldest centres of learning in India, with a reputation that precedes its name.

Jamia Millia Islamia University
JMI offers 1 year Diploma in the preferred language. Classes are usually held alternative days of a week.
The admission is through an Entrance test followed by an interview. In the written test questions of pretty generic in nature are asked.
The interview is taken by an interview panel where reasons for the candidates interest in that language is asked and questions of similar nature is asked.
University of Calcutta
The university has been teaching foreign languages like Tibetan, Chinese, German and Dutch since 1917. It later on added French, Japanese,
Portuguese, Italian and Polish languages.
However, some of these languages were withdrawn after 2nd world war. The University is currently teaches 9 foreign languages – Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Korean, Persian, Russian, Spanish and Tibetan.
The certificate couses requires you to be a Graduate in any discipline as an eligibility while Diploma courses require Graduation+Certificate in the language.
Viswa Bharathi University
The University was the first university in India to start Japanese language courses in India. The language department is collectively known by the name ‘Bhasha Bhawan’.
The Foreign Language Departments offers courses in Chinese, Japanese, Indo-Tibetan, Arabic & Persian. The eligibility criteria requires 60% aggregate in Higher Secondary with 60% in English.
University of Mumbai
MU or University of Mumbai is the oldest in Maharashtra. It offers foreign language courses in French, Spanish, German, Russian, Japanese, Arabic,
Persian, Mandarin, and other foreign language.
The study mode has both, part-time classes and full time courses. There are certificate, diploma, advance diploma courses. The eligibility for certificate courses requires you to be atleast have passed class X. The admission is made through entrance test by the university.
